An unattended robot cell that changes its own fixtures

A system integrator built a robot-fed cell where the robot swaps fixtures and grippers on one datum.

01

The challenge

The integrator needed a cell that could run several part families without an operator at the machine. Fixtures had to be exchanged by the robot, and chips had to be cleared automatically so each fixture seated correctly.

The robot also needed to switch between gripping and tool-handling tasks without a new datum for each.

02

The solution

The cell uses a Robotic Quick Exchange Arm module, so one robot arm performs several tasks on a fixed zero point. Pitch 52 AIR plates on the machine table blow debris clear automatically.

The same Φ62 interface is used on the gripper side and on the fixture side, keeping the system simple to teach and maintain.

03

The results

Unattended run time per day
8 → 14 h
Cell changeover between part families
30 → 4 min
Datum for gripper, fixture and tooling tasks

Customer quote

“The AIR option was the difference. We stopped losing runs to a chip under a fixture.”
